My recollection is that Shifra and date (Andy Hakan?) died prom night our junior year.  A great tragedy due to carbon monoxide.

Yes, Shifra and Andy died prom night. I do remember attending one of the funerals. They were both great students, quite smart, and fun. My children would tell you that they learned the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning from me because I would use their tragedy to talk with them about it.

I had a crush on Shifra when I was in Kindergarden.  I grew up after that.  Here death will always be a tragedy as she was in my heart for a time.

Shifra was a lovely and intelligent young lady. I didn’t know Andy that well. What a tragedy. The following Monday our English teacher barely acknowledged the event, and made it clear that we were there to study English. Today they would give their classmates some time to deal with their feelings. A change for the better, and some of our generation helped to bring it about.

I knew Shifra from John T. Hartman Elementary when we were in Girl Scouts together. She was a quiet, pensive girl with a great sense of humor-we both loved watching the campfire on overnights! When she had her Bat Mitzvah at 13 yrs of age, she inspired me to go home that day and tell my father that I too, wanted to have a Bat Mitzvah. Fast forward to the morning I learned that she had passed away, Marcia Perlman Cox and I sat on my front stoop in utter shock and sadness. It was a defining moment as we experienced this significant emotional event and passing of a dear, lovely and intelligent young woman who left this world too soon. May her memory be for a blessing to all of us who knew her.
