I knew Harold since 2nd grade at W.R. Nelson elementary school.  Harold was from a modest family; his parents owned a small sewing machine store at 46th & Troost.  We were both in the Paseo HS district but were able to transfer to SW in 1963 because of the school building’s expansion.  In high school we carpooled, and he occasionally came to my house to play chess.

Coincidentally, we both attended the University of Kansas but I only saw him once on campus during our junior year.  He informed me that he had been diagnosed with NHL (I think).  The next time I saw Harold was at the 10-year SW reunion.  When I inquired about his condition, he said he was in remission.  After that encounter, I looked forward to reconnecting with him at the 20-year reunion, but unfortunately, he had lost his battle with cancer a year or two before the 1988 event.

For those classmates who didn’t know Harold, he was one of the nicest, kindest people you could ever know but also one of the quietest.  For those of us who were fortunate enough to know Harold, he was a source of inspiration, always smiling, always friendly.  It was a sad day when he left us.
